i like this pattern i painted. it’s like a wall paper which gives me a sense of lethargic atmosphere yet a little relaxing due to the soft tone and colors. the milky set of colours give a little victorian wallpaper kinda feel.
(the above comment is subjective.)
this is in the international paper ration.
too light.
another painting with reference to a photo of a rose.
took a long time completing this picture. it is still a little out of proportion. adding blue and green to darken the tones as shadows is nothing new and i have slowly get use to it. however, i have yet to get hole of the skills. as can be seen in the painting, brushes are not blended properly, and some parts look really weird, especially for the shadowed area in the middle of the rose. i think i should not have used such concentrated paints on watercolour paper.
p.s(black background is not the original version. it is replace using photoshop.
hello. i shall post my first post. and this is a horrible way to start.
this was a drawing i did in art last year. hmm. it is A3 in size and i took three hour to rush it through. but it was like the third piece i did. if you just ‘woah’ that i did three full painting. nope . i’m not that qiang. the three previous pieces are merely re-painting of her face only. i lost the original copy of the potrait and the three faces too. but ultimately, painting this was really eyes straining. i actually felt really accomplished then..=.=
anyway, some may think that there is something wrong with the proportion of waist. but it is not! really. ok maybe a little. but can you imagine that there is laces falling from the chest? yupp, something like that.
apart from these, i am still uncomfortable with the use of conplementary colours to darken tones. taking the face as an example, although i had to try a couple of times before attempting the final piece, i could not complete it without having the face feeling bashed up. using shadings and shadow to outline facial features was certainly not an easy task. therefore, there was a sense of accomplishment upon completing this assignment though it is far from a good painting.
painting is something i really like to do. however, i can never seem to grab hold of the skills of painting, be it water colour painting, postel paint, arcylic or whatever. i always ask myself what kind of painter am i? a question i hardly can i answer. through imitating great artists’ works may help us improve our skills of painting. i cannot deny that. by have you ever tried painting the sky? the exact same sky you see. not just what you think a sky should look like. well, i tried. but i am far from success.
looking up into the sky. why does the sky look so properly blend into soothing colours, yet at the same time, mixed with complementary colours and weirdly shaped clouds that make it a masterpiece of an impressionist?
the sky itself is blend while the clouds is iin blobs. if i am able to draw like what nature can, i am sure that i can paint much better drawings. unfortunately, my standard is yet there.
sky has always been my love, its beauty, is beyond whatever is beyond the sky. cone one day. i would like to take a trip to greenland and view is beauty with the company of aurora.
everytime i scan in a picture or a drawing, the images just do not come out as what i expected. either the colour become less vibrant, or the lighting is just not right.
i cannot deny that through the use of photoshop and other technology, art becomes more influential and widely appreciated. more people are now involved in aestatics through the middle man named internet. however, techonology has gradually smothering our painting skills. as we are relying too much on them.
this made me recall the exhibition i went in China las year during bsp trip. unfortunately no photos was allowed, so i cannot share the beauty of the paintings i saw. as it was an exhibition i went last year, much information on the exhibition could not recall by my failing memory. but what i could vividly recall, were the many the flawless oil painting by western(should be european) artists in the 18th century, each one at least the height of an adult and width of about three metres(if potrait in layout). every single detail was neatly drawn and blended so well with the shadows so real like they were not drawn but the lights in the exhibition itself, so real that it was like a photo, or even better since photo once scaned/upload and printed, it would turn out to look really flatten. i remember that there was one painting of a war scene on board a ship in the vast ocean. that was really awesome. due to my poor vocabulary and shortage of brain juice to continue searching for words to describe such incredible painting, i shall leave you to imagine the artistic beauty of the freezed motion. nothing of impressionist, but purely realistic painters. i dont think any successful painter of modern society can be as perfect as these 18th century artists were.
or is there?
this was a promotion for my cca production. i find this really colourful among the black and white backgroud (refering to our hair and uniforms). as the show is about seeking our own dreams and soar with them, we choose to use balloons as a symbolic meaning to promote our show. thank you all those who made the effort to be enthusiastic during the promotion!
edited (post production addition) : i was gald that many turned up although the production did not went of very smoothly. i hereby apologise to all those went for the friday show.
Medium: Pastel – Approx. size: A6 – Approx date: 2007
this was my first time messing with pastel. no kidding. it was a mess. this was an attempt to try how different pastel colours could be blended together. unfortunately, i did not keep the pastel drawing on plants which i did after trying this out. in fact, the pastel was only applied after i painted a light mint green watercolour background.
although the ‘phantom’ is seen to be done with three coloured pastel, i had use nearly ten colours. Namely dark ocean blue, light sky blue, yello, moss green, mint green and brown. pastel does not attached to the surface of the paper we use. therefore, i had to be really careful and stand at a distance when i was doing the appro. A3 plant drawing.
but it was really fun being dirty! i bet xinyun wouldnt agree more!
design for class notice board.
this was a design for the interclass Chinese New Year decoration competition. the theme was to use recycle materials, a every common theme these days.
at the beginning, no one actually volunteered to do it, giving the excuse that there were three art students in our class, of which i thought to be ridiculous and decided to boycott by not helping at all. however, in the morning of judging day, my dearest form teacher stepped in. i believe that she saw the problem of citizens of seven being dependent of others, and having a crutch mentality, pushing the responsibility to three poor members of society who have the bad attitude of not sacrificing for the community.
anyway, she stepped in an gave us a scolding. haha. i know i was wrong to boycott, but i was smiling in my heart throughout the process of mass soul searching. she asked those who were responsible for the decoration to stand. no one reacted. finally, after a few calls, i, together with a couple of friend(monitresses and ppl in art) stand up. then i turned to my table partners to stand too. the point was to let everyone stand up cos everyone was responsible.(like duhh).
wahaha. i felt just in the mist of solemnity. i was motivated as a tribute to my FT. after which, i started to do my work of decorating the front notice board. when i was deperate for a proper background, there is no wallpaper to begin with, and nothing to put up as background. then, i saw a pile of unwanted newspaper. (which show that wed’s reading news paper day is not yet a success,) i just chose the duller pictureless pages to place on boards as background. to make the boards have some CNY atmosphere, a thick red border pinned using red packets while the design on the top left hand corner is shaped like the corners of Chinese styled windows. Chip (or is it Dale?) was from the original design of noticeboard. while the nuts were from the original background, which did not even cover the whole noticeboard. so our class helped in drawing and cutting out the different shape and sizes of nuts to suit Chip/Dale. Red borders are also use to frame the notices on the boards to emphasise each annoucements.
Lastly, an effort was made to let Chip/Dale look as if it was ready for CNY by adding a traditional chinese hat using redpackets once again.
i like the contrast between the background and the borders which does not give a strong bright feel, which is what we get commonly when we use a one coloured colour paper for notice boards. also, the boxes for announcement is arranged in an up and down manner where the last one is smaller. this is little unconventional in notice boards where papers should be aligned proper to maximise space. in this case, announcement will be placed on top of each other to keep things neat and tidy.
ultimately, i like the concept and layout of this design and i will use them in future on my own noticeboards. XD

too dark. like i’m in the forest.
